Fee waiver for low wage workers extended and enhanced.

Te Hautū Kahurangi | Tertiary Education Union’s long running ‘Secure work = Better Futures’ campaign, which offers a fee waiver on TEU membership to those who are joining on short term employment agreements (6 months or less) and are earning less than $15,000 over the course of that employment agreement, has had an overhaul.
In the past only those working in casual or fixed term roles got the fee waiver, whereas it now applies to any worker earning under $15,000.
The aim of the fee waiver is to encourage workers with insecure employment to join so we can advocate for them as a group and attempt to shift as many people as possible into secure employment.
Dougal McNeill, TEU Branch President at Te Herenga Waka | Victoria University of Wellington says “the big increase we’ve seen in tutors becoming members of TEU has been of huge benefit to all concerned. It has allowed young and precarious workers to become part of something bigger and experience the power of active unionism while adding new and valuable perspectives to our branches that need to be heard, talked about and advocated for as much as possible. I hope this new initiative leads to more of the same.”
