Casual staff are better off in TEU.
Feb. 20, 2025
With university funding set to be cut and polytechnics cutting costs, it’s more important than ever for casual staff to join their union.
Casual staff often feel vulnerable at work and fear losing their jobs if they speak up. That’s what they need the TEU so much, to speak up on their behalf and ensure their rights are being upheld.
A casual staff member at Waipapa Taumata Rau | The University of Auckland, who wishes to remain anonymous, says “the main things that appeal to me about union membership are the opportunities to do delegate training, build connections, network, and be part of a wider community. The union has given me a lot of opportunities to talk to important people in my institution and the sector, and address the issues that I think matter most to casual staff.”
“It’s really important that we break down the barriers and bust the myth that casual staff like myself can’t join a union. Everyone is welcome.”
TEU’s membership subscriptions are income related, so those with lower incomes pay less and if you earn less than $15,000 per annum, you are entitled to a fee waiver until the end of the calendar year.
Please share this story with casual staff in your work area and ask them to join.
