Hau Taki Haere | Tertiary Update Vol 29, No 12

Penny Simmonds, Minister of Vocational Education, has agreed to speak at Te Hautū Kahurangi | Tertiary Education Union’s online National General Meeting this Wednesday 25 June.

The purpose of the National General Meeting, as set out in our constitution, is to confirm the minutes of the previous NGM; receive and adopt the National Report; receive a presentation of the audited accounts of the union and approve the auditor for the year; propose any rules and policy for amendments or advancement at either National Conference or Council; and consider any other general business of the union.

When formal business is concluded, the Minister will address the meeting for 15 minutes. She is expected to defend her plan for vocational education following the break-up of Te Pūkenga, as her proposed legislation – the Education and Training (Vocational Education and Training System) Amendment Bill – moves to the select committee stage.

The Zoom meeting is only open to registered branch delegates but the meeting will be broadcast live on our Facebook page for anyone who wishes to observe.

The meeting will run from 2-4pm. The Minister is due to address the meeting from 3:30-3:45pm.
