Let’s keep fighting back together.

A fortnight ago the TEU, along with thousands of members of other unions from across the labour movement, came together to protest the regressive policies of the current government.
In addition to calling for an end to anti-Māori, anti-worker, anti-union and anti-climate policies, we demanded better investment in public & social infrastructure, public services, health and education.
The mass union meetings came at a time when government policies have led to over 7,000 jobs lost in the public service, as many as 100 at Te Pūkenga this side of Christmas and more likely to be on the way. The government is also attacking Te Tiriti via the “Treaty Principles Bill”, the environment via the “Fast Track Approvals Bill” and workers’ rights via changes to the Holidays Act, consultation on the Health and Safety Act, and enabling employer increased use of contractors to avoid minimum entitlements.
Tumu Whakarae – Māori | National President – Māori Huhana Watene says it was encouraging to see such large turnouts at all the events, and TEU flags front and centre amongst a sea of other unions.
“Standing strong to protect workers’ rights, uphold Te Tiriti, and counter public service cuts is crucial and it’s at times like these that we can really illustrate the power of solidarity and what we can achieve when workers from all sectors use their voices to protect and support each other.”
“Massive mihi to all who came, sang, shouted, waved flags; the staff and activists worked so hard to bring it all together; and to the bus drivers who got us there and back safely!”
“Let’s build from here, make sure we support those who support us and make the next one bigger and better again!”
