Hau Taki Haere | Tertiary Update Vol 29, No 16

On Saturday 20th September, 132 years after women secured the right to vote in Aotearoa, Te Hautū Kahurangi | Tertiary Education Union will join a range of actions across the country in protest of the government’s rollback of pay equity.

The actions, organised by Te Kauae Kaimahi | The Council of Trade Unions will be a show of strength and solidarity with our nation’s lowest paid women workers who have had $12.8 billion stolen from them to pay for tax cuts.

Te Pou Ahurei | National Secretary Sandra Grey says “pay equity is not optional. It’s astonishing that in 2025 we still have to protest to achieve something that should be a given – women should not be paid less than men. And yet, simply because the work they do is mostly done by women – that is the reality for our country’s librarians, nurses, teachers, aged care workers, and many others.”

“We will keep fighting until the Government reverses its rollback of pay equity legislation and funds the claims.”

Everyone who supports women has a role to play in this action. Please make the time to join an event near you. Click here to find your local event, sign up and keep updated.
