2026 Pasifika Fono.

Hau Taki Haere | Tertiary Update Vol 30, No 2

The first TEU member meeting for 2026 was the Pasifika fono held on 29 January at the MIT Pasifika Community Centre in Auckland. The fono bought together members from across the motu from Dunedin to Auckland with a great cross section from the various sectors within our membership.

Members particularly enjoyed and appreciated having Amy Ross, our new Te Pou Ahurei | National Secretary with them for the day; listening and engaging on the issues that matter for Pasifika members. We also had Latayvia Tautai, Gender Justice Campaign Coordinator at Council of Trade Unions Te Kauae Kaimahi (NZCTU) speak to the group about the pay equity campaign, pay equity People’s Select Committee and wider gender justice issues with a focus on how it all impacts on Pasifika workers. The rest of the day focussed on structural issues, branch engagement and developing a workplan for TEU’s Pasifika Network. A successful day which provided a great platform for future engagement and development of TEU Pasifika members.

“As a new Pasifika Advisory Group member, the fono was my first chance to connect in person with Pasifika TEU members. I reconnected with familiar faces, met new colleagues, and valued meeting TEU leaders across all levels. These relationships are what bind us in mutual service.” Tanya Wendt Samu, Senior Lecturer, Auckland Uni

"Kia ora koutou and warm Pasifika greetings. I am proud to belong to a union that values our Pasifika voice! As a network, we promote and validate the interests of Pasifika people. We facilitate and share information. We focus on what is relevant to our Pasifika membership at work. We are inclusive of our political, industrial, economic, social, and cultural interests of being Pasifika Proud!” Sailauama Cheryl Talamaivao, Unitec
