2026 General Election.

Hau Taki Haere | Tertiary Update Vol 30, No 1

The Prime Minister has announced that the General Election will be held on Saturday 7 November.

There have been some significant changes to the rules around voting since the last election so it’s important that you’re aware of the following dates:

  • Thursday 6 August is the last date for Māori who are already enrolled to change roll types
  • Sunday 25 October is last day to get on the electoral roll (you must be enrolled by this date in order to vote) – this is a big change – previously it was possible to enrol and vote on the same day throughout the advanced voting (sometimes called ‘early voting’) period. This is no longer possible.
  • Monday 26 October Advance Voting Opens – this is also a public holiday (Labour Day).

Please encourage people to get on the electoral roll – https://vote.nz/
