Clare Thomas - Toi Ohomai.

Kia ora, ko Clare Thomas toku ingoa.
I am honoured to be nominated for the Women’s National Committee. I feel this a great opportunity to be part of a committee that is at the forefront in the fight for gender quality and the advancement of women’s rights. I firmly believe the work being undertaken is not only vital but also in creating a fair and just society for all New Zealanders.
I am an active TEU member currently holding the position of Branch Women’s rep (Tauranga). It has been a busy year, recently celebrating 130 years of Women’s suffrage with a quiz and coffee. I also attended the National Women’s Hui in August visiting the National Library and discussing a range of projects with a great team of women from across the country.
What I have noticed is the ongoing challenges and issues that women continue to face in New Zealand with the gender pay gap and the underrepresentation of women in leadership roles. The National Women’s Union with their advocacy efforts, initiatives and activism have helped bring these issues to the forefront of public discourse and have contributed to positive change.
I have been a TEU member since I began working at Toi Ohomai and have witnessed many changes in the sector and am always been well supported by the TEU. I believe it is important that our collective voices are heard particularly as the tertiary education sector continues to change as it transitions to Te Pūkenga operating model. As nearly half of women are part of the workforce, it is imperative they are supported to protect their rights to improve their lives. I know from my own experience as a mature student it is hard studying, working and looking after a family.
I strongly believe that the work of the National Women’s Committee is vital in supporting women’s issues in the workforce. I will work hard to promote our voices as women.
