My name is Steve McCabe, and I’m asking you to vote for me for the position of Te Tumu Arataki IPC Tiriti | National Vice President – Tiriti.

I’m currently in my fourth year as Branch President at Te Whare Takiura o Manukau, the Manukau Institute of Technology. In this role, I have been involved in mahi to measure and better manage lecturer workload, I have been part of the Union’s delegation on the annual promotions review panel (Career Path), and I was part of the Union’s bargaining team for MIT’s Academic Collective Employment Agreement. I also took part in planning MIT’s covid- 19 response, and my focus has always been on best protecting the wellbeing of branch members during the uncertainty of recent times.

I am currently a member of the Union’s Industrial and Professional Committee.

Before moving to tertiary teaching, I was an active member of Te Wehengarua, the Post- Primary Teachers’ Association, and I served as a high-school branch chair for three years and as a health and safety representative for four.

In all of these roles, I have tried to ensure that the mana of Union members is protected and enhanced. I believe that the role of a union is to work on behalf of its members to ensure that their employment relationships with their employers are equitable and based on mutual respect. I believe in building strong working relationships between unions and employers, because this is the best way to ensure the best possible outcomes for our members.

I am also active in the media in Aotearoa, and use my platform to promote the interests of both our members and our brothers and sisters in other unions across the country. I am passionate about the union movement, and firmly believe that a strong union is the best possible way to ensure that we can enjoy secure, productive, and well-remunerated employment across the tertiary sector.

As Te Tumu Arataki | National Vice President I will work to ensure that the Industrial and Professional Committee is a proactive group that supports Council in setting strategies that ensure the best possible outcomes for all our members.
