DR SIÂN HALCROW.

Matariki for my whānau is a celebration to come together and share stories, kai, and knowledge. It is a time to think about the past and loved ones who we have lost, taking stock of where we are today, and looking to the future. It is a time to pause to reflect and remember, celebrate with kai with ones close to us, and think about things to come.

This year the theme of Matariki mā Puanga is about inclusion and diversity in the celebration of Matariki. The theme of inclusivity, diversity, and equity is one that resonates with my whānau’s values and the values of Te Hautū Kahurangi. It is only through making space for others and working together with knowledge from everyone that we can move forward in meaningful ways.

I see celebrating Matariki as a privilege and a way that we can learn from others about traditional Māori knowledge (mātauranga), which can lead to greater inter-cultural understanding and inclusivity. This year my kids and I want to attend a sacred hautapu ceremony to learn more about Matariki, then share some kai and watch some kapa haka. I am thankful for the manaakitanga that local communities in Aotearoa show in organising events for everyone.
