Earlier this year, NorthTec members went on strike to achieve a fair pay increase. The strike initially involved not taking attendance registers and not entering or helping with entering marks in to the system. Later, the industrial action was stepped up by two full days of work stoppage.
The negotiations were protracted. Along the way to an eventually positive outcome, there was a very well supported rally on the side of State Highway One, pickets, a global pandemic, and the two Covid-19 lockdowns. NorthTec members remained positive and determined through all of this.
TEU organiser Jill Jones says the positive outcome was the a result of the collective resolve of TEU NorthTec members and support shown from around the country.
“NorthTec members received messages of support and solidarity from all over Aoteroa New Zealand. The strike was a courageous and well planned action which provided inspiration for all our members”.
