I am a lecturer in the School of Management at Massey University, Manawatū campus. I first joined a union when I began part-time work at 15 –encouraged by my parents who were staunch union members. I have been actively involved in tertiary unions for the past 20 years. Initially in AUS(Association of University Staff) – I was one of inaugural members of Te Kahurangi Whaiti the roopu who represented Māori staff in AUS.
I have been a TEU member since it was formed and have been on the Massey Branch Committee for the past 7 years as the Te Uepu (Māori staff) representative. At a national level I have been a member of Te Toi Ahurangi for approximately 6 years. Initially as a Te Uepu academic representative and more recently as the Wāhine Māori representative. I regularly attend national hui including Te Toi Ahurangi, Hui-a-Motū and TEU National Conference.
I am passionate about fair and equitable workplaces for all Māori staff. This includes; advocating for full time employment, gaining recognition for the extra work Māori staff undertake outside their job description and ensuring a culturally safe workplace and space. I also advocate for higher numbers of Māori to be recruited, retained and promoted in the tertiary sector. The success of our tauira depends on the wellbeing and wellness of our Māori staff.
I am interested in standing again as the Wāhine Māori representative on Te Toi Ahurangi for the
