Government asks for views on possible new education laws

Handing the Minister more power over teacher education and restoring the skills leadership role to Industry Training Organisations (ITO) are among the legislative changes being proposed by the Ministry of Education.

The Ministry is seeking feedback on a number of issues that are being considered for legislation in 2018. Consultation on six issues that may be included in an education bill is open until 13 April.

The proposals include restoring the skills leadership role that ITOs had from 2004 to 2014. This earlier role involved identifying skill needs, developing strategic training plans, and promoting but not delivering training.

The Ministry is also proposing to require a newly constrained Education Council to consult with government when considering changes to teacher education or registration requirements.

The Minister could also be given the power to issue a Government Policy Statement on the teaching profession.
