Victoria general staff negotiate pay model

Victoria University of Wellington began employment negotiations with its general staff this week with an offer to move many of them on to a new pay model.

The university had already shifted its non-union member general staff across onto a new pay model earlier this year.

The pay model for those general staff on individual employment agreements removed some of their salary steps and replaced them with a range of rates.  It extended their hours of work by an hour and a half every day from Monday to Saturday and included Sunday 9am to 6pm as normal hours of work.

It removed entitlement to retirement leave, changed long service leave and inserted a clause saying employees may be required to work on public holidays.

TEU organiser Nicki Wilford says negotiating a fair pay model is very important to TEU members who are general staff.

“Many people joined TEU because they want the fairer pay model we have in our collective agreement, rather than the one the university has given to non-union members on individual employment agreements.”

Wilford says steps are a fairer, more equitable way to pay people than a range of rates, which is open to subconscious bias and often results in smaller incremental pay rises or no pay rises at all.
