Earthquakes close many institutions

Earthquakes in the northern parts of the South Island, followed by floods in some areas, meant many tertiary institutions spend part of this week closed.

Christchurch’s institutions were largely unaffected with the University of Canterbury, Lincoln University and most of Ara Institute of Canterbury all remaining open.

However, Wellington’s institutions, Victoria University, Weltec, Whitireia, Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and Otago University’s Wellington campus all closed on Monday.

NZCER, the Tertiary Education Commission and the Ministry of Education also all shut on Monday. None seems to have suffered significant damage.

Several buildings were still closed yesterday including Weltec’s School of Construction and Petone campuses, Whitireia’s Porirua campus, Industry Training Centre and Wellington campus, and Victoria’s Pipitea and Kelburn campuses.
