UCOL plans to sack librarians and student helpers

People working at UCOL’s Palmerston North campus are shocked by the scale of proposed staffing cuts that would see up to 43 jobs go.

The polytechnic plans to get rid of librarians and people who work in the Student Health Centre, school and programme leadership and Student Support Services.

TEU branch president Steven Wharehinga says the there is no rationale for the job losses.

“The job cuts are very severe. I’m really worried that students will suffer because all these people who could lose their jobs are there to help students.”

Palmerston North students will lose decades of expertise and institutional knowledge as well as dozens of loyal supporters if UCOL makes the cuts.

UCOL is consulting with its staff for the next two weeks.

Wharehinga says TEU will be challenging the proposed cuts.
