Kia ora koutou,

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori

This week is te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori language week) so, before we give you the rest of the Kua Rangona check out some of these online resources to help introduce te reo into your workplace:

First go to http://kupu.maori.nz and register to be emailed one Māori kupu (word) each day. Today’s kupu is, fortuitously, rongo (rangona): hear, smell, taste.

Next check out http://www.korero.maori.nz/news/mlw where you can:

  • Learn some basic phrases and greetings in te reo Māori,
  • Learn some phrases for special occasions,
  • Find some ideas for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2010,
  • And much more.

Also NZ History has recordings of 100 Māori words every New Zealander should know, and Te Whanake has Māori reo pod-casts, TV shows, an on-line dictionary, animations and forums.

CTU releases Dear John letters

The Council of Trade Unions - Te Kauae Kaimahi has written to Pirimia John Key expressing its deep concern at the recent employment law changes and the way in which they were announced. To date the pirimia has not responded to the letter sent on 21 July, or to an earlier letter of 15 July on the same subject.

CTU tumuaki Helen Kelly said: “I have conveyed to the prime minister our views on the serious damage to fairness at work for all wage and salary earners that will be done by these changes. It is most important that John Key responds to our concerns as soon as possible.”

You can read Helen Kelly’s letters of 15 and 21 July to John Key here.

Metal workers lead the way for other union members

Nearly 2000 engineering and manufacturing workers will have pay increases above inflation and an extra day holiday next year after EPMU members voted overwhelmingly to ratify the Metals and Manufacturing multi-employer collective agreement (MECA).

The new agreement provides for a 3 percent increase on wages and allowances this year, followed by a 3 percent increase next year, and a one-off holiday to acknowledge that, for the first time, Anzac Day will fall on the same day as the Easter Monday holiday in 2011.
