Wanted: Temporary TEU organiser for Christchurch

Union organiser

The Tertiary Education Union (TEU) has a vacancy for a 0.5 organiser for six months based in our Christchurch office.

This is a part-time position and we are seeking an experienced union organiser with a combination of organising, advocacy, communication and administrative skills. An essential requirement is the capacity to work effectively under pressure.

The person appointed will be responsible for representing members of the union at Canterbury University. We are an education union committed to employment equity and Te Tiriti o Waitangi and a similar commitment will be expected from the appointee.

TEU organiser

Key Tasks

  1. Provide advice to and advocacy for, members on employment related matters, including personal grievance cases.
  2. Assist with formulation of claims and advocacy of collective employment agreements as required.
  3. Recruitment of new members.
  4. Provide relief staffing for other organisers.
  5. Deal with membership enquiries/requests for assistance in respect of        collective/individual agreements.
  6. Liaise between national office and the branch committee.
  7. Liaise with other union organisers on site and with the local union movement.
  8. Such other duties as may be required by the Deputy Secretary.

Terms of Appointment

  1. The appointee will be responsible to the Deputy Secretary of the union.
  2. The salary for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in accordance with the salary scale in the collective agreement for union employees.
  3. TEU is an equal employment opportunities employer.
