Claims meeting for nationwide university bargaining are taking place this month and we want a strong turn out. In the wake of the budget we need your visible support to help negotiate strong and fair pay and conditions. The two AUT meetings are tomorrow, with other universities’ meetings following over the next three weeks:
- AUT Wellesley campus, Wed 10 June, 12-1pm in room WS 114
- AUT Akoranga campus, Wed 10 June, 3-4pm in room AC 211
ITP negotiations
The large collective employment agreement covering TEU members at 6 institutes of technology and polytechnics (ITPs) – Wintec, WITT, Unitec, Whitireia, NorthTec and BoPP – is currently in the meddle of negotiation. This year the team is seeking to limit maximum timetabled teaching hours to 750 per year and 20 per week. This large collective agreement helps set pay and conditions for the ITP sector generally. You can email the bargaining team of TEU members a message of support by sending it to lead advocate Irena Brorens and she’ll share it with the team. They’d love to hear from you.
Other ITP negotiations currently underway include Tairawhiti, MIT, NMIT, and Otago. Hopefully more news from them next week!
Support the Employee Free Choice Act in the USA
Education unions in the United States request your support for their campaign to pass the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA). The act would protect American workers’ rights to join unions and to bargain collectively, free from employer intimidation and threats of dismissal. But it also sends a strong message to employers and political leaders in the rest of the world that gross violations of workers’ rights will not be tolerated. Visit Education International’s action page to find out what you can do to help.
